Proof Minting
Proof Minting
Every custom medallion Medallic Hawaii produces is a high point of accomplishment.  From
initiating the first design to the eventual striking of fine medallic artwork, the final proof-mint
mirrored finished product is referred to as the “Caviar of Coinage” introduced in the mid-
nineteenth century by the U.S. Mint.
Polished steel die used for striking
Proof minting is the highest quality minting of
coins/medallions utilizing an exact process to
achieve an high quality end result.  Compared to
other types of mechanical minting, Proof
minting is based on first creating a bas relief
sculpture by an artist and later reducing this
design/image down to the size of the
coin/medallion to be struck.  Utilizing this process
creates a product that has a mirror like background
against a frosted relief with extremely
fine detail.

Reducing machines are used to cut the dies,
which are precision turned to fit the striking
presses.  These dies are “case hardened” and
later hand polished by expert craftsmen to a mirror
finish that will eventually be reflected in the
coin/medallion being made.

Blanks (planchets) used in Proof minting are
carefully prepared in advance of the actual
pressing process by custom built polishing
machines and then thoroughly cleaned, usually
ultrasonically, up to four times before being used.

Extremely high tonnage presses are used to strike
the blank between the dies. Unlike commercial
coins, Proof minting requires a much slower
speed in pressing and a much higher striking
pressure.  For clarity and detail, the blanks are
often struck several times.  From here, the finished
product is carefully placed into a coin roll or
individually packed into an airtight container called
a capsule to prevent any damage during handling.

Available Finishes
1Troy Ounce .999 Fine Silver is the most popular
proof-struck medallion because of its fine finish,
precious metal content at an affordable price over
gold. Gold-plating of silver is also a more cost
effective finish to produce.  Finally, nothing is more
brilliant than producing a solid 24k gold proof
medallion that will be an enduring keepsake to
own.
